A Single Man

Greetings RPer's!

I finally went to see "A Single Man" tonight, the last of this years 10 Academy Award Nominees and it was more than worth the wait. This visually stunning piece by rookie film maker and fashion Icon, Tom Ford, is equally heart-breaking and hopeful. I was extremely moved by Colin Firth's remarkable performance of a gay man struggling with the tragic loss of his long time love. If you get the chance, check it out. I'm sure it will be on DVD soon but I wanted to see it before Sunday.

Hope you are all well!!

  2. Oops, my bad. A Single Man is not up for best picture after all. I confused it with "A Serious Man" by the Coen Brothers which I have rented to complete the list of 10 nominees. Colin Firth is up for best actor though :)

  3. How stellar was Sandra?! Wow. And Kathryn Bigelow. Gooooooooo girl power!

  4. Girl power, indeed! Sandra was amazing. Equal parts funny and heart warming. That dress! Oscar & best dressed (in my opinion) all in the same night. I love that she was on hand to accept her Razzie the night before. Proves she doesn't take herself too seriously.

The Hurt Locker is a powerful well acted film and I had a hunch it was going to be the big winner last night. Kathryn is definitely worthy of the all the accolades this "little" film collected during awards season.

Off to Alice in Wonderland tonight with my niece. It had a huge weekend at the box office so I guess I'll see what all the hype is about. I love Johnny Depp but find most Tim Burton films a little on the twisted side :)

  5. Thanks for the review Remmi. I value your opinion, as I usually pretty much concur.

I enjoyed the Oscars too and agree Sandra was the best dressed. I admit I enjoy the fashion as much if not more than the awards.

Not in a rush to see Hurt Locker but there are a host of films from the last year that I have not seen and look forward to. Should be a lot of fodder for our chats here. Young Victoria, An Education, Bright Star (I think Leen did review this briefly already) along with A Single Man and It's Complicated are obvious romances.

Do let us know your thoughts on Alice. One of my all time favorite stories.

    Cheers

  6. Of the movies you mention, the only one that I have yet to see is Young Victoria. I will definitely rent it when the DVD is released. I can recommend all the other films you list above Ann.

I will admit that I'm not normally the biggest fan of Tim Burton movies. I usually find them to be a little dark and twisted for my liking. Having said that, I was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed Alice in Wonderland in 3D. Johnny Depp is a natural as the zany Mad Hatter and is worth the price of admission though I would probably pay $10 to watch him recite the phone book for 2 hours. The reviews are mixed but since my expectations were low, it was refreshingly entertaining!

    Hope you enjoy it too!

  7. I must see this -- I simply adore Colin Firth. Did you know he used to live in British Columbia in relative anonymity, before his big break? He had a Canadian girlfriend.

I will watch this movie. Thanks, Rems.
