Would love to hear some of your final thoughts over here on this forum and perhaps Marianna you would honor us with a wrap up review?
I would like to get it all out of my system and take a break from ABC for a while. I used to enjoy DWTS, but am afraid it may now be ruined for me with Jake in the mix. It makes me wonder how much that show is manipulated and manipulative too. Although I admit, I didn't react that way to Melissa moving over. I hadn't seen Jason's season.
Oh how I long for Don and Betty, Roger and Joan et al. At least on Mad Men we know it's not real and we can feel free to fantasize the feelings and inner motives of the characters to our own hearts content. I find them so much more compelling and they get under my skin in a way that the 'real' people of TB never do.
It's interesting that TPTB try to create a story with actual folks, resulting in a show wreaking of phoniness, while fictional stories can seem absolutely authentic when well crafted. I know that often the truth is stranger than fiction, and perhaps that's why we are attracted to TB. We want true romance.
Unfortunately we are not privy to the truth of what goes on there and it seems even the "contestants" are mislead, manipulated and end up much maligned. It is inevitable that no matter how much we like the Bach/Bachelorette in the beginning of the season, we will dislike them by the end, as the whole premise of the show makes them come off as louts or losers. They are forced to 'lead on' the final few and somebody always has to be heartbroken and dumped on national TV.
That's why I quit watching after the Travis and Moana season. Her pain did seem real to me at the time. Now I don't trust that any of the tears are real. As I have stated previously, I started watching Jillian because she was Canadian. I continued to watch because of all of you and for that I have no regrets.
Jim, how are you holding up? I know you watched Jake reluctantly too. Will you watch Ali? She was smart enough to get away from Jake early and pursue her own agenda. I didn't think she felt anything for him at any point, but was playing her role as directed. Would you have liked to see Gia instead or wish her better off away from this franchise, like Reid?
Look forward to any and all of your final thoughts on "The Wings of Love" - the most dramatic season ever of course! I personally wish Jake would just flock off.
Ann
Just "flock off"....funny Ann! I paid little attention to the Wings of Love so I don't really have too much to add. I enjoyed reading and commenting on Marianna's Musings (as always) and on the Iambic Pentameter thread which Belle seemed to abandon prior to the WTA. I didn't watch the Jolly wedding last night so I have no comment on that.
ReplyDeleteI have figured out that I prefer the Bachelorette primarily because of all the "eye candy" so I will definitely tune in this summer for the 6th installment. Hopefully it will inspire the former DH crew to continue posting :)
Ann!
ReplyDeleteNice to know you are still there. Have missed you this season on the BB.
Like you, I am left mostly uninspired about Jake. The jury's still out for me as to whether he is simply hyper-earnest about the whole thing and truly believes he has found the woman of his dreams and his forever... or, if he is a master-manipulator and his mission is fame.
You are right: there's something about going on this show which seems to change contestants. For viewers, this often translates into disliking contestants we previously liked.
So... either the show's disease is contagious and all who come in contact become infected... OR... every contestant who agrees to be on this show has an ulterior motive in mind -- launching some kind of media career being the most common, it would seem.
Just once, I'd like Chris Harrison to use his overused superlatives and call this show exactly what it is:
"The Most Dramatic Stepping-Stone Ever!"

Ann,
ReplyDeleteLoved this. Missed you this season.
Ann,
ReplyDeleteAren't you an interior designer? There's a great thread on the ABC board to which your expertise could be contributed!
About Ali: (lifted from a post on the ABC board)
ReplyDeleteWhy did Ali, given the strong girl that she is, willingly sign up for this show? Given Ali's intellect and her psychology background AND her study of relationships, I cannot fathom why she willingly accepted this position esp. after she watched her edit this season. On top of the less than flattering edit she received, she observed the tarnishing of Vienna's character. Add to that--if it isn't enough--that, since Jason's season, the scandals have increased in size and degradation, and any sensible person would easily walk away from this season realizing that she's the next target. Unless
1) She desperately wants to break into the entertainment world.
2) Ali was Bach'ette 6 prior to this Bachelor season.
Not only does the edit give us clues (I'll enumerate them if anyone wants) that Ali was slated to leave at F4 and become the next Bach'ette, but Ali herself gives us good insight into this arrangement. Someone of Ali's background just wouldn't say "yes" to another season after the horrors of last season unless she was held to it.
All that being said, I hope to goodness that she rocks the socks off her season. I do, however, think she said it best when she said on the ATFR these words: "I'm scared."
