What do you think Reid would and/or should do if ...

...Jill and Ed end up breaking up (whether or not the break up is caused by any rumors)? I'm conflicted about it and thought I would pose the question to the group to get some discussion going.

From a purely emotional perspective, I would hope that Jill would reach out to Reid and that he would be there for her - if it's meant to be, it will be.

But from a more logical perspective, I would hope that Jill would instead lean on her family and keep out of the limelight as much as possible for as long as possible.

The true romantic in me would hope for option 1, but not sure that's the best for Jill or Reid.

  1. Hi Just for Fun,

This is a very difficult question to answer because we would, essentially, be speculating in a vacuum at this point.

I think Reid's fun-loving personality and quick wit charmed us all and when it looked as if there was chemistry between Jillian and him, we all got carried away in the romance of it all.

I still believe in the power of timing. If Reid truly did fall in love with Jillian (and, so far, everything I've seen of him leads me to believe that he, unlike Ed, did), then he would take her back if she and Ed broke up soon.

But with every passing day, it will become more likely that Reid will move on. If Jillian were to seek him out, say 6 months from now, I'm not sure he wouldn't have started another relationship. And if that new relationship is one of substance, then it will be Jillian's loss forever.

This is all assuming that any of this was what it looked to be.

Frankly, my head is spinning, trying to figure out what part of what we saw was real and what was not.

  2. Hi JFF,

I agree with Marianna's comment above. But there are a couple of thoughts perhaps we should keep in mind, when trying to sort this out with no real info about how deeply involved Jilly and Reid really were.

Reid, along with the rest of us saw what incredibly bad judgement Jill had, first with Wes, then with Ed (it has become clear Reid has no respect for Ed, for whatever reason(s)). But it certainly looked to me like he may have been willing to take her back even at the ATFR. Which tells me that he really truly loves her, is willing to forgive her, and do what it takes to make their (potential) relationship work.

There are two things that I think Reid sees in Jilly even more clearly than we do, that would enable him to accept her back, if she asked. One is that she is totally 100% committed to work hard to make her relationships succeed, so if she were to go to Reid, he would feel safe in knowing he had that kind of commitment from her. The second, even more important fact is that Jilly has proven over and over again that she is extremely loyal. Once she makes a commitment to a person, she's stuck there, unless a person hits her with a 10 ton truck multiple times.

Since we know Reid wouldn't accept her unless he was sure he could commit to their love as well, we know that an acceptance from him would necessarily mean a commitment (loyalty) from both sides.

One last point, from Reid's end. He ALWAYS plays fair, is always on the up and up. The very fact that he felt he should be able to go back to Jilly and rectify HIS mistake and hope she would think only of the entity "we", means that he will accept her right to do the same. Ultimately, I think he is a far deeper person than Jilly, who once he falls, falls hard, so I think that if she finds herself with the opportunity to approach him quickly enough , as M said, there might still be a Rilly to celebrate.

  3. Very well put Marianna, so much information but so little knowledge. Will we ever know the truth?
At this point it's all rumour and speculation. Perhaps again, they will just "put a face on it" for a short time and then announce they are great friends but.....

Being very cynical, whatever the end result, they all seem to attain a certain amount of notoriety. This, in turn, leads to opportunities that would not have been possible without the "fame"
Melissa is a very good example, particularly as Jason turned out, apparently, to be such a "bad guy"
Again, this brings us back to editing.
You begin to wonder who is the good guy and who is the bad guy!

I guess they are successful with this show because here we all are trying to figure it out.

    Susan

P.S. Thank heavens it's cooled down.

  4. Hi JustForFun,

An excellent question! It's not an easy one to answer. I can't claim to represent Reid's position. I don't care for Jillian as she was depicted on the show. That may have been a bad edit, although it's hard to imagine why ABC would do that to their heroine.

The timing is important too. If she looked into Reid's eyes at the ATFR show and said that she was wrong and couldn't live without him, I would attribute that to love. If her relationship falls apart with Ed and she asks Reid to take her back, her motivations might appear suspect.

But I'm not Reid and I didn't have the deep love for Jillian that he shared with her. He strikes me as a very forgiving person. I don't think he would reject her out of pride, anger or spite as so many foolish people do when given a second chance. So if she did ask him to take her back and he did so, I would respect his decision as coming from the right place.

To answer a variant of the question, I think I know what ABC would do. To save their skins they are probably offering Reid the moon right now to be the next bachelor. If he signs, he cannot date or become romantically involved until after the new next season airs. In the meanwhile, if Jillian and Ed break up, it would be in ABC's interest to offer her the chance to come into the show mid-season and ask to be allowed to join as one of the contestants. Once word got out that this was going to happen, people would tune into the show in record numbers to see how Reid responds. They would stay tuned if she stayed in the running. ABC would take in serious advertising money.

I'm not suggesting that any of this is in the best interest of Reid, Jillian or the poor women contestants who would be eclipsed by this stunt. It strikes me as the kind of sneaky twist ABC is likely to pull if they could.

  5. Here's what Jill said in the latest edition of people:

    paraphrased, regarding Reid's return proposal
It didn't matter what he said. It wouldn't change that I was in love with Ed. I wanted to be with Ed.

    Soooooooo confusing.

Let's get some real love stories going. Or love stories written by us. They're more real than any reality show.
